Growing up in Wisconsin left me with a love and enduring appreciation for the geometry and gentle flow of the agricultural landscape. The plowed rows of earth, parallel lines of cornstalks and linear demarcations of crops paint a quiet, lush carpet on the native soil. Atop this rolling canvas sit groups of farm buildings in endless variations. Barns, silos, sheds and houses form little villages in each separate farmyard. The result is unending poetry. These wall sculptures are my ode to this landscape and to its subtle but enduring beauty.

The inspirations for my wall sculptures often come from places I have visited. "Infinite Sky" refers to an open recreation area in southwestern Wisconsin where I flew balsa wood planes as a kid. Both the open sky and life itself seemed, at that time, to have endless possibilities. "Ace Hotel" was inspired by a stay at the namesake's location in Portland, OR, as a finalist for a sculpture commission. I had no idea how I did after the interview. You can find the result in my outdoor sculpture category.

My wall sculptures are very sturdy, made of welded aluminum, and easy to install with full size templates which locate the hidden wall anchors.

I enjoy the ability to change the landscape, if just a bit, with an outdoor piece. While many of my outdoor sculptures are created with a specific site in mind, I also make pieces which are available for destinations yet unknown. My painted sculptures are made of welded aluminum. Their surfaces are then finely ground, treated with a chemical cleanser, primed with an epoxy primer, and painted with a polyurethane gloss finish. After speaking with conservators and other sculptors, this is the best system of materials for outdoor painted sculpture. They will never rust.

The sentinel-like pieces are from my Chess series, a group of works with the theme of making choices in life.

Themes of place are seen in many of these wall sculptures. "Ocean" takes the concept of ocean as its inspiration. It was neither the Pacific nor the Atlantic which served as a point of departure, but rather a reference to the notion of ocean, which is vast, seemingly homogenous, yet full of contrast and detail when examined carefully.

Some of these pieces were created as site-specific commissions. These always present an interesting challenge, and one I am happy to accept. Often, I am asked to make an echo of a previous piece, but with a new direction, and the original piece begins to have the aura of a parent, and the echo a descendant with evolutionary variations. My hope is that the gene pool was enriched in the process.

All of these pieces have stories. "Raising Harmony" is a tribute to Mary P. Sharp, a civil rights and fair housing activist in the 60s from East Lansing, MI. I was commissioned to create a piece celebrating her social activism for the City Hall of East Lansing, and had the privilege to collaborate with her daughter, Mary Sharp MD. I suggested that the sculpture be composed of elements of differing yet related shapes, a reference to harmonious cohabitation by mixed peoples. My wish is that the uplifting thrust of the piece celebrates Mary's achievements in a hopeful manner.

"Trees" acknowledges the names of many donors who contributed to the Rotary Arboretum of Milwaukee's Urban Ecology Center. They anticipate the future growth of trees on the site while serving as a vehicle for donor recognition.

My commissions involve the input of art committees, architects, designers, contractors and the public.

Some of them touched m personally, and others, such as Maurice Ravel, have touched me through degrees of separation. "PW Stomp" is an affectionate paean to Joseph Sylvestoro LaSpisa, my high school band director. He endowed me with a life long love of music and all that is aesthetic.

"Ocean Park" celebrates the works of the painter Richard Diebenkorn, using the name of his famous series of paintings which bridge the observed and the abstract.

Prints:

Found objects tell a story. When I walk here, there, or anywhere, I pick up found objects left by nature and by fellow walkers. A broken watch band, a shard of tree bark with a Brancusi shape, a puzzle piece - all of these hold tales within. I trace their shapes and use them in sculptures and in these prints.

Jazz is an ongoing series of prints utilizing the shapes of these found objects. No two jazz solos are alike, and no two of these prints are alike. Each is a unique improvisation in color and form.

Paintings: The studio is an ever-changing landscape of tools, tables, machines and works-in-progress. On occasion, I pause in making sculptural pieces, pick up a brush and paint the scene. Available Paintings

My painting series Stories begins with collected shapes. These may be found while walking, while looking at work in museums, or driving down a city street. I compose them into groups which tell a story, and that story is different for every viewer.

Studio Life

The studio is often a disjointed tangle of stuff, a web of materials and tools, an obstacle course of things in progress, but it lurches forward as a place to make things happen. I love having visitors, so if you are in the area, please let me know, and you can sign my door before you leave.

I benefit from the help of many in my work, such as my helpers and fellow artists Lauren Janka, Clark Stamm, Bill Taylor, Lynn Lucius and Whitney Taylor. You can find them in photos and feel traces of their support in my pieces.
